Activist and writer bell hooks was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky as Gloria Jean Watkins. As a child, hooks performed poetry readings of work by Gwendolyn Brooks, Langston Hughes, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. She earned a BA from Stanford University, an MA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a PhD from the University of California-Santa Cruz. FOR MORE

bell hooks (born Gloria Jean Watkins; September 25, 1952) is a contemporary feminist theorist who deals with issues of race, gender, class, and sexual oppression. She took her pen name from her maternal great-grandmother as a way to honor her female ancestors and chose to use lowercase letters to get away from the ego associated with names.
