RACHEL CARSON Helped Launch the Environmental Movement With ‘Silent Spring’: Taking Stock After 60 Years, September 26, 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the publication of Silent Spring, Rachel Carson’s pivotal book that is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. Carson documented the devastating environmental and human health impacts of widespread pesticide use, and challenged the efforts of the powerful chemical industry to minimize these risks. Sixty years since Silent Spring was published, Rachel Carson’s voice echoes in the work of contemporary environmental activists.
“To sin by silence, when we should protest, makes cowards out of men,” the poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox wrote in her 1914 anthem against silence — a line Rachel Carson leaned on in summoning her epoch-making courage to speak inconvenient truth to power as she awakened the modern environmental conscience.
