Anne Carson, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature 2026

October 8, 2026

“Crazy, I think they’re all crazy,” Carson told Icelandic broadcaster RUV when asked how she was ‌feeling after learning she had won while on the Arctic island. “I’ll get a sticker on the front of my book.”

Canadian author Anne Carson won the Nobel Prize in Literature Thursday for “her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”

Ingrid Carlberg, author, journalist and permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, announced the prize from the Swedish Academy in Stockholm. Carlberg said she spoke to Carson on the phone earlier.

“She was very taken by surprise,” Carlberg said. “She, although we didn’t have so much time to speak, and all she had time to tell me was that she is, for the moment, in Iceland, where she’s listening to the wind. She was taken by surprise, but very happy. I could hear that in her voice.”
